VIJAY SINGH COMMITS TO DEUTSCHE BANK CHAMPIONSHIP
8/21/06 5:26 PM

SEVEN SPONSOR EXEMPTIONS ALSO NAMED TO THE 2006 FIELD

NORTON, MASS., Aug. 17, 2006 Vijay Singh, ranked No. 4 in the Official World Golf Rankings and fifth on this years PGA Tour money list, has committed to play in the 2006 Deutsche Bank Championship, which will take place Aug. 29-Sept. 4 at the Tournament Players Club of Boston. Singh, who won the 2004 Championship with a 16-under-par score of 268 and has earned 29 PGA Tour victories, could not defend his title last year due to a back injury that left him unable to compete.

Singhs inclusion means the Deutsche Bank Championships first three winners will be reunited on Labor Day weekend, with defending champion Olin Browne and the inaugural champion Adam Scott already committed to join the 156-player field. Singh won a hard-fought victory over Tiger Woods in 2004, dethroning Woods from the top spot in the world rankings. The Fiji native finished the year at No. 1. Singh will be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame at St. Augustine, Fla. on Oct. 30.

Additionally, the Deutsche Bank Championship awarded sponsor exemptions to Andover, Mass. native Rob Oppenheim, as well as Steve Stricker, Dan Forsman, Nick Watney, John Engler Jr., Kyle Reifers and James Lepp. They will join a field vying for a $990,000 winners check from a purse of $5.5 million.

Oppenheim provides New England golf fans with another local favorite to root for, joining crowd favorites Billy Andrade, Brad Faxon, Brett Quigley, James Driscoll and Tim Petrovic. Born in Andover and the winner of the 2002 Massachusetts Amateur Championship, Oppenheims home courses are Indian Ridge Country Club in Andover and Renaissance Golf Club in Haverhill, Mass. He is currently leading the 2006 Canadian Tour Order of Merit.

Championship week for the Deutsche Bank Championship begins with practice rounds Tuesday, Aug. 29, and Wednesday, Aug. 30, and a pro-am competition on Thursday, Aug. 31. The four-day Championship begins Friday, Sept. 1, and continues through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 4, the only official Monday finish on the PGA TOUR. The first two rounds of the Championship will be covered on USA Network and the final two rounds will be televised on ABC-TV.

Tickets can be purchased by visiting the official Championship website at or by calling (877) TIX-4DBC or 877-849-4322. Tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis for each day and are limited to 10 individual tickets per person. Limited daily tickets are still available.
